Gradara

Given its particular structure, the entrance arch to the hamlet is without doubt much older than the walls and perhaps even dates from the Roman period. The Malatesta, who settled here around 1260, built the fortress that is still standing today. Gradara’s fame is however, undeniably linked to Dante’s poem and its famous line that gave rise to the passionate love affair and ultimate death of the tragic lovers Paolo and Francesca.
